Are Hair Extensions Right for You? Why Proper Care Matters More Than the Install

Hair extensions can completely transform your hair. They can add length, volume, fullness, and even help you achieve a look that would be difficult to create with your natural hair alone.

But here’s something we believe every extension client should know before investing in extensions:

A beautiful extension install is only half of the equation. The other half is how you care for your hair at home. At Divine Beauty Lab in Chicago, we take a lot of pride in creating beautiful, customized extension installs. Whether you’re interested in K-Tip extensions, I-Tip extensions, or beaded wefts, we want your extensions to look and feel amazing throughout their wear. But no matter how experienced your stylist is or how carefully your extensions are installed, there is a limit to what an install can withstand. If you aren’t willing to properly care for your extensions, extensions may simply not be the right service for you.

Extensions Are an Investment

Hair extensions aren’t a “set it and forget it” service. You’re investing in professional hair, installation, maintenance appointments, products, and your stylist’s time. You’re also making a commitment to changing some of your everyday hair habits. Extensions require a little more intention than natural hair does. That means brushing properly, being mindful when sleeping, keeping up with maintenance appointments, using the appropriate products, and treating the hair gently. If you’re someone who tends to aggressively brush through tangles, sleep with wet hair, pull your hair into tight styles, skip maintenance appointments, or generally don’t want to think about hair care between appointments, extensions may not be your best fit.

And that’s okay!

Not every service is right for every person. Your Stylist Can Install Them Beautifully, But They Can’t Maintain Them for You

This is one of the most important things to understand before getting extensions. Your stylist controls the quality of the consultation, the extension method, placement, installation, blending, and overall technique. Once you leave the salon, however, you become an important part of the maintenance process. Even the best extension installation can experience problems if the hair is repeatedly handled roughly or neglected. Think about it this way: your stylist can build a beautiful foundation, but you have to take care of the house. If you’re constantly pulling, tugging, matting, or neglecting your extensions, eventually that foundation is going to struggle.

Gentle Hair Care Is Non-Negotiable

Extensions need to be handled gently.

Brushing should be intentional rather than aggressive. When detangling, you want to work through the hair carefully instead of ripping a brush through knots. You also need to pay attention to the areas where your natural hair and extensions connect. Excessive pulling or tension can put unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

And please, don’t wait until your hair is severely tangled to deal with it.

A few minutes of gentle maintenance each day can make a huge difference compared with trying to undo a large amount of matting all at once. Sleeping With Extensions Requires a Little Extra Care. One of the easiest ways to create unnecessary tangling is sleeping with your hair loose and unprotected. Before bed, your hair should be gently brushed and secured in a comfortable, low-tension style that helps minimize movement and friction. Your nighttime routine matters just as much as what you do during the day. If you aren’t willing to spend a few extra minutes caring for your hair before bed, extensions may not be the best fit for your lifestyle.

You Have to Keep Up With Maintenance Appointments

Extensions aren’t designed to stay in indefinitely. Different extension methods have different maintenance schedules, and your stylist will recommend the appropriate timing based on your hair, the extension method you’re wearing, and how quickly your natural hair grows. Skipping maintenance appointments can lead to problems. As your natural hair grows, the extension attachment moves farther away from the scalp. This can change how the hair hangs, increase tangling, and make the extensions more difficult to properly maintain. Maintenance isn’t optional. It’s part of wearing extensions.

Your Products Matter

The products you use at home can make a huge difference. Extensions require products that are appropriate for both your natural hair and the extension hair. Your stylist can recommend products based on your specific extension method and hair needs. This is also why using random products simply because you already have them at home isn’t always the best idea. When you invest in extensions, you’re investing in maintaining the quality of that hair, too.

Who Might NOT Be a Good Candidate for Extensions?

Extensions may not be the right choice for someone who:

- Doesn’t want to spend time maintaining their hair at home

- Is unwilling to brush their hair regularly

- Frequently sleeps with wet or tangled hair

- Is rough when brushing or detangling

- Doesn’t want to use recommended products

- Isn’t willing to return for required maintenance appointments

- Frequently wears very tight hairstyles

- Doesn’t want to make changes to their normal hair routine

- Expects extensions to require no additional care

- Isn’t prepared for the financial commitment of professional extension hair and maintenance

This doesn’t mean you can never have extensions.

It simply means we may need to have an honest conversation about whether extensions fit your current lifestyle. The Best Extension Clients Understand That It’s a Partnership. Our favorite extension clients understand that their stylist and their home-care routine work together. We can create a beautiful installation, customize your placement, choose the appropriate method, blend everything seamlessly, and teach you how to care for your hair. But once you leave the salon, your habits matter. When you take care of your extensions, you give your investment the best chance to look beautiful between appointments and help protect the health of your natural hair. That’s ultimately what we want. We’re not interested in simply putting extensions in your hair and sending you home. We want you to understand your extensions, know how to care for them, and feel confident maintaining them.

Before You Book Your Extension Consultation

If you’re considering hair extensions in Chicago, start by asking yourself one simple question:

“Am I willing to take care of them?”

If the answer is yes, extensions can be an incredible way to transform your hair.

If the answer is no, that’s something we want to know during your consultation. We would much rather have an honest conversation beforehand than put extensions in your hair and have you struggle with them afterward.

At Divine Beauty Lab, our goal isn’t to sell extensions to everyone. Our goal is to create beautiful, healthy, sustainable extension experiences for the clients who are truly a good fit for them. Beautiful extensions start with a great installation, but they stay beautiful because of great care.
